Cox Club News: Charting a Successful Course for Our Future Coxswains!
The club clubhouse, and loch were absolutely buzzing over the weekend as we successfully hosted our intensive SCRA Coxswain Course. It was an incredible weekend of learning, skill-building, and brilliant community collaboration on the water!
From Classroom to Crew
The course kicked off on Saturday afternoon with our participants gathering in the clubhouse for an in-depth theory session. Trainees dove into the essential mechanics of boat handling, steering strategy, safety protocols, and what it truly takes to command a 22-foot St Ayles skiff.
On Sunday, it was time to put that theory into practice. With beautiful sunshine overhead, our trainees took to Forfar Loch to get invaluable, hands-on experience at the helm. From managing the crew's rhythm to navigating tight turns, the enthusiasm, commitment, and progress shown by everyone throughout the weekend was fantastic to see.
Welcoming Our Neighbours
We were also absolutely delighted to welcome members from Montrose Coastal Rowing Club, who travelled over to take part in the training alongside our local Forfar crew. Building these inter-club connections is exactly what the coastal rowing community is all about!
A Massive Thank You!
A huge, heartfelt thank you goes out to Anne and Liz, who ran the course on behalf of the Scottish Coastal Rowing Association (SCRA). Their deep pool of insight, knowledge, and invaluable practical tips gave our new coxes the absolute best foundation possible. We are incredibly grateful for their time and expertise!
A Vibrant Day on Forfar Loch
Sunday also gave our trainees a brilliant real-world environment to practice in, as the loch was alive with activity! Our new coxswains shared the water seamlessly with local fishermen, paddleboarders soaking up the sun, a solo sculler, and our own club sailors out for their Sunday afternoon series.
Seeing so many different water users safely enjoying everything Forfar Loch has to offer is exactly what makes our club community so special.
Congratulations to all of our newly trained coxswains! Keep an eye on our club calendar for upcoming social and fitness rows where you can see our fresh crew leadership in action.
