Four different classes of boat took to Forfar Loch on Thursday evening for the first Pursuit Race of the new season. David Smith set off first in his Firefly followed less than a minute later by Commodore Tony Walker in his Solo and new member 11-year old Sebastian Kimber in a club Wayfarer, crewed by his dad Mark. Alan Cairns took up the rear shortly after in his Laser. The light wind wafted from the south-east, presenting the sailors with challenging shifts.
David led at the first mark, followed by Tony, Sebastian and Alan, and the order remained so until after the second mark when Alan started his progress up the fleet. The leeward mark proved especially difficult in wind-shadow from the trees, but once round Alan shot away into the lead, with Tony keeping in touch. A contest developed also between the other two boats further back. In the end Alan prevailed at the front, with Tony second, David third and Sebastian fourth.
All things considered, Sebastian's performance was most commendable, and it is clear that he is going to make his mark in the Club.
