Forfar Sailing Club

The Club

Forfar Sailing Club is a small family oriented club sailing on Forfar Loch - an inland loch close to the town centre of Forfar in Angus. Whether you are already living in the area, or are moving here, why not come and visit us. To learn more about the club browse around the web site, or contact us at secretary@forfarsailingclub.org.uk to ask any questions you have about membership or learning to sail at Forfar.

What Do We Sail?

Because of the size and nature of Forfar Loch it is suitable only for small, light and manouverable boats but not for larger vessels such as yachts as these need much deeper water and space.

Forfar Loch is a Nature Reserve and powered craft (other than specific safety boats) are not permitted. For this reason Forfar Sailing Club is a dinghy only club. However non members and members of the public regularly use canoes, kayaks or sailboards on the water and the local angling club has its own rowing boat. There is no restriction on dinghy type and although single handed Lasers and Solos are the most common and double handed Enterprises and Wayfarers are regularly sailed, everything from a 20ft lugger to a 7ft Topper Taz can be seen.

When Do We Sail?

The club season is generally from about the beginning of April until the end of November every year, sailing most Sundays, Tuesday evenings and some Thursday evenings. Occasionally events are held over an entire weekend.

Sailors with a wide range of experience take part in races and even those quite new to the sport quickly look forward to these events. However, depending on their ability and the prevailing conditions, others can free sail and usually experienced people stay on to teach the less experienced after the races have concluded.

There are training events and opportunities to learn throughout the year and the club has its own boats which can be used by members.

Membership Fees

Membership fees for the 2015 season are:

Type Fee
Adult £110
Family £150
Student/Cadet £40

Boats for Hire

The club has five Toppers, two Wayfarers and two Laser for hire to members. The cost of a session hire is members: single-hander £3, double-hander £5; non-members: single-hander £6, double-hander £10. Boats are allocated on a first come first served basis. The idea is to allow members to familiarise themselves with sailing different boats before buying their own.
